Weeding Out Your Options: Keeping Dodgy AC Techs at Bay

You’ve heard the story. A homeowner or property owner approaches an AC technician for some help with their AC systems, and ends up getting charged exorbitantly for a seemingly very minimal tweak. And that’s not it – two, three days after, the client finds out that the issue was not truly fixed in the first place, so they contact the same AC repair guy again for some follow-up service – another exorbitant charge. So, after a series of what appeared to be futile attempts to “fix” the AC unit, the owner finally decides to switch to another repairman. This time, it’s a legit AC repair professional who has undergone proper trainings and has earned a license in the craft. Turns out, the previous AC tech did nothing but cause further damage on the unit! The owner now has to pay for new parts on top of the AC repair fees.

It’s a sad narrative, but it does happen and if you’re not careful, it could happen to you. AC repair may sound like a task that anyone can do, but actually, it’s not. The best you can do to dodge bad business is to heed the following guidelines in picking an AC system repairman:

  1. Always ask for a quotation, and ask for it before any work has been started.
  2. Run a background check on your prospects before you finally hire them for their services.
  3. Ask for recommendations from people whose opinion you trust. Word of mouth is powerful!
  4. Know which manufacturer warranties are still in effect at the time of service.
  5. Know the technical qualifications required by your state for AC repairmen to legally perform their duties therein.
  6. Ask your service provider if they have insurance, and ask this before any work has been started.

Don’t allow yourself to be a victim! Use your smarts and pick an AC repairman wisely. This is the best way you can make the most out of your money.
